The Word is "CONSERVE." We encourage you, our member/owners to assist us, and ultimately you, in finding ways to reduce the energy consumed at your homes and businesses. This will, in turn, allow you to pay less for your electricity, and keep your hard-earned money in your pocket to be used for other items.

Electric Cooperatives across the United States have always promoted conservation, many years before "green," "conservation," and "carbon footprint" became buzzwords. Through your volunteer efforts, we here at SVEC have put into place over 9,000 load control switches on hot water heaters, thereby reducing demand at peak consumption times. Some cooperatives are now experimenting with control switches on air conditioners and "beat the peak" modules. Cooperatives have had hydro power as a part of their power supply portfolio for many years and are involved in wind, solar, nuclear, methane gas projects and evaluating other alternative energy sources.

There are more than 900 electric cooperatives in the United States, delivering reliable, affordable electric power to more than 40 million people across the nation. Electric cooperatives are private, independent electric utilities owned by the members they serve. The electric cooperatives support responsible stewardship of the environment.

You as a member of an electric cooperative need to let your voice be heard. Electric Cooperatives have begun a grassroots effort to ask all member/owners to contact their elected officials and ask them some tough questions that require straight answers. Some questions to ask are: What is your plan to make sure we have the electricity we'll need in the future? What are you doing to fully fund the research required to make emissions free electric plants an affordable reality? Balancing electricity needs and environmental goals will be difficult. How much is all this going to increase my electric bill and what will you do to make it affordable? We need to find a balanced solution for these and many other questions.
